Intro to Zeewaar the 1st Dutch Seaweed Farm

Sustainable seaweed farming is a new and innovative practice taking hold in Europe. In 2013, Zeewaar was the first in the Netherlands to start a seaweed farm. Founded and managed by two women, Zeewaar is a unique entity in the world of aquaculture. Seaweed is the underwater rainforest of our planet, but since it lives out of view, not many understand its importance. In the EU alone, 300 milion kilos of natural seaweed stocks will be “wild harvested” this year. Taken from the seas without replanting it. That is not sustainable. And this volume grows annually by 10% (data from the FAO). Zeewaar’s mission is to stimulate fishing communities switch over to sustainable seaweed cultivation so that the natural stocks can perform their important rainforest role for the planet. Cultivated seaweed is of much higher quality than wild harvested seaweed, and this is one of the reasons it is so tasty. We can’t show you how good it tastes, but we want to share with you how beautiful seaweed farming is. More information on our website www.zeewaar.nl
